On the Vintage Bronze St. Barbara Medal the saint stands crowned and veiled, the palm of martyrdom in one hand and a small tower held before her, the attribute that has identified her in every century of Christian art. Her name is lettered around the rim, SANCTA BARBARA, and the modelling of the face is unusually careful for a medal of this size.
The reverse is what sets this one apart. In place of a text it carries a military trophy in low relief: a plumed helmet, a crossed cannon barrel and sword, a field gun on its spoked wheel and a shell standing at the side. Barbara was shut in a tower by her father and killed by his hand, and when lightning struck him down she became the patroness of all whose work involves fire and sudden danger — artillerymen and miners, firefighters and armourers. The lower third of that face is left smooth, with room for an engraved name or date.
The medal was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
