St. Barbara
Early Christian virgin martyr venerated since antiquity, traditionally said to have been imprisoned in a tower and martyred by her own pagan father, who was struck dead by lightning afterward. Patroness against lightning, sudden death, and explosions; protector of artillerymen and miners. Cult is ancient though the biography is largely legendary. Feast December 4.
