The St. Hubert medal gives its whole front to one scene: a stag standing on a rocky outcrop in a wood, a small cross rising between its antlers, and a huntsman fallen to his knees before it with his hounds still at the foot of the rocks.
That is the morning that changed Hubert's life. He had gone hunting on Good Friday, and the stag turned and faced him with the cross between its antlers, and he left the chase for the Church, becoming bishop of Liege and afterwards the patron of hunters and of everyone who works with dogs and horses. The reverse is engraved with a spray of iris and buds beside a flowing script that reads de St Hubert, the mark of a keepsake carried home from his shrine in the Ardennes, where pilgrims came for centuries to ask his protection for their households, their hunts and their animals.
