Vintage Bronze Virgo Medal with Lourdes Grotto

The Virgo medal gives its front entirely to the Mother of God: a profile bust, veiled and haloed, with sprays of lilies on one side and roses on the other. Across the top, in large open letters, stands the single word VIRGO — Virgin — the oldest and simplest of her titles.
The reverse turns to the grotto. A figure stands in the rock niche above; below her a girl kneels with her hands joined. This is Lourdes, where in 1858 Bernadette Soubirous knelt at the rock of Massabielle and saw a lady standing in the opening above her, and where the sick have come for healing ever since. Six small portrait roundels ring the scene in a foliate border, and the letters IHS, the monogram of the name of Jesus, are set among them. The lilies belong to Mary's purity, the roses to her love.
