His dog lies at his feet, the animal that in the old story carried him bread each day while he lay alone in the woods.
Roch was a fourteenth-century pilgrim who nursed the plague-stricken through northern Italy and caught the sickness himself, and he has been invoked against epidemic ever since. He is kept as a patron of the sick, of those who care for them, and of dogs. The relief is soft and painterly, the hills behind lightly grained, and FRANCE is lettered small along the lower rim of the French original.
