The St. Raphael medal is a four-lobed quatrefoil with a great deal packed into it. In the pointed oval at the center of the front the archangel strides forward, staff in hand and robe blowing back behind him, while dense foliate scrollwork fills the four lobes around him.
The reverse is given entirely to words. Beneath a small fleur-de-lis, five lines read ST. RAPHAEL PRESERVE US FROM ILL HEALTH AND ALL DANGER TO LIFE — a petition set out in plain English rather than Latin, which is rare on devotional work of this age and gives the medal the directness of something said aloud. Raphael is the archangel who travels: in the book of Tobit he walks the long road with young Tobias and brings back what cures his father's blindness. His name means God heals, and he is asked for by the sick, by travelers and by those who nurse them.
