The Vintage Bronze St. Kateri Tekakwitha Medal sets the bust of a young Mohawk woman into a round panel framed in gadrooned scallops. She wears a beaded headband over a long braid, her hands folded before her, and the modelling of the face is careful and particular rather than generic. Kateri was born in the Mohawk Valley in 1656 and died at Kahnawake on the St. Lawrence at twenty-four, the first Native American woman raised to the altars.
The reverse gives her name in two raised lines, CATHERINE TEKAKWITHA, beneath an arching spray of lilies, the flower that gave her the title Lily of the Mohawks. The name is cast in the older French-derived form, without the title of saint, as it was written through the long centuries her cause was carried, and a small ITALY mark below records where the original was made.
