The Santa Rita Medal is one of the most fully lettered pieces in this collection. One panel shows the saint haloed and kneeling before an altar set with a crucifix and a skull, roses gathered at her breast, with SANTA RITA / ROGAD POR NOSOTROS, Saint Rita, pray for us, cut into the band below. The other shows Christ seated on a rock, stripped and crowned with thorns, his head resting on his hand in the attitude known as the Man of Sorrows.
That second panel carries Spanish verse down both borders and across the base. The border reads TU QUE PASAS MIRAME Y CUENTA MIS LLAGAS, you who pass by, look at me and count my wounds, and the band beneath answers it: Ah, son, how ill you repay the blood I shed. The words are addressed straight to whoever holds the medal, which is what gives the piece its force. Rita of Cascia is kept as the saint of impossible causes, and the roses at her breast recall the ones brought to her in winter.
