The San Fernando pendant is built like a little shrine. A standing figure with a rayed nimbus and a wide ruffed collar holds a small orb in one hand and an upright sword in the other; behind him an arch springs from two columns, and a wreath of leaves and flowers opens out around the whole above a fluted shell base. The openwork lets light through, so the figure reads clearly even at this scale.
The sword and the orb are the attributes of Saint Ferdinand — San Fernando, Ferdinand III of Castile, the thirteenth-century king canonized for his justice and his care for the Church, and the saint for whom cities on two continents are named. He is invoked by rulers, by engineers and by anyone who has to govern well.
