The Openwork Heart Charm is a heart opened at its center by a second, smaller heart, so that light passes straight through it. The broad border between the two is filled edge to edge with rows of small fanned shells and finished all round with a line of raised beads, and the lower side draws out into a short tail that keeps the shape lively rather than exact.
There is no lettering and no figure here; the heart is left to speak for itself. In devotional use it is the heart offered up, given over in love. Between people it is the oldest token there is. Either reading suits it, and it sits as naturally beside a saint's medal as it does on its own.
