The Vintage Bronze Openwork Crucifix with Sun and Moon fills its arms with pierced leaf-and-scroll tracery, flaring wide at the shoulders and drawing to a point below the feet, with the corpus laid over the whole. A small titulus above the crowned head is lettered INRI.
Those four letters stand for Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum, Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews, the charge Pilate ordered fixed above the cross and kept on crucifixes ever since. Set into the tracery on either side of the figure are two small discs, a crescent moon answering a rayed sun. The pairing is old in Christian art, drawn from the darkening of the sun at the Crucifixion and long used to show the whole created order present at Calvary. It is the detail that gives this piece its character.
The crucifix was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
