Vintage Bronze Open Scrollwork Crucifix

The Open Scrollwork Crucifix turns its arms into foliage. Each one is cut away and scrolled, closing in a fleur-de-lis, with a further fleur-de-lis crowning the head of the cross and another filling the flared foot. The corpus is modeled in relief across the open center, its outstretched arms following the line of the scrollwork so that figure and ornament read as one design.
Openwork of this kind was the old maker's way of giving a large cross presence without weight, and it changes as it moves, catching light through the gaps rather than sitting flat against the eye. The titulus was left plain on the original and no lettering appears anywhere on the piece, which leaves the corpus and the scrolls to carry it. It serves as well at the end of a rosary as it does worn on its own.
The Open Scrollwork Crucifix was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves the crucifix's vintage character.
