The Vintage Bronze Large Latin American Crucifix opens out at both ends. The side arms finish in wide fluted fans, a foliate crest rises above the head of Christ, small leaves spread behind the corpus at the crossing, and the lower shaft broadens steadily to a flaring, fluted foot. The figure is long and slender, the head fallen to one side.
Crucifixes at this size were kept on household altars as often as they were worn, standing where a family gathered to pray at the end of the day. The broad fluting was cut to catch candlelight, so the cross brightened and moved as the flame moved, which is why nineteenth-century Latin American workshops gave so much surface to the metal. The leaves at the crossing carry the old idea of the cross as a living tree, green again at the place where it was cut.
The crucifix was faithfully reproduced from a nineteenth-century antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
