The Vintage Bronze Elegant Floral Crucifix is built around a burst of rays that opens behind the head of the corpus. The arms end in pierced clusters of leaves and small blossoms, the upper terminal is finished with a fleur-shaped crest, and the foot widens into a scrolled cartouche of the same foliage, with the slender figure quietly modelled against all that ornament.
The flowering and the rays together make the point such crosses were made to make, that the Cross is not only an instrument of death but the source of life, and that the glory has already broken out behind the head of the one who hangs there. Crosses in this manner were worn as jewelry as much as devotion, and the openwork keeps the piece light for its size.
