Product Details

An unusual cross from the Andes. Its arms are banded with fine transverse ridges and edged with beading, a shaped finial tops the upright, and below the crossing the shaft widens into a panel of curling foliate scrolls. At the end of each side arm, and again at the foot, the metal is cast into an open ring โ€” the detail that gives the cross its name and its silhouette.

Ecuadorian devotional metalwork of this kind came out of small village workshops, where a form once settled on might be repeated for generations with only slight variation, and the antique original behind this piece is a rare survival of that tradition. Crosses like it were worn at the throat in the highland parishes, where devotional work and everyday silver came off the same bench. The rings open the outline and keep a solid cross from reading as heavy, and the slight unevenness in the ridging is the original maker's hand carried over intact.

The Ecuadorian ringed cross was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves the cross's vintage character.

  • Made in the USA
  • Artisan-cast from an antique original
  • Finished by hand, so every piece is subtly unique.
  • Buy the medal alone, or add an optional chain or cord necklace
  • Add a cord or chain to have it arrive assembled and ready to wear
  • Arrives in a deluxe velour jewelry box
