The Vintage Bronze Crucifix with Knotwork Terminals is a well-balanced cross of moderate size. The corpus hangs at the crossing, the head fallen to one side and the loincloth knotted at the hip, and each of the four terminals is worked with an interlaced ribbon-and-bead ornament that flares out to a rounded end. A small round finial finishes the top of the shaft.
The interlace gives the cross an older, almost insular character, the kind of knotted band that runs through early medieval metalwork in Ireland and Northumbria, where a line without beginning or end stood for eternity. Against it the corpus is modelled in a softer, later manner, and it is that meeting of two centuries in a single small object that makes the piece worth looking at closely. Nothing is lettered on it; the form carries the devotion by itself.
The crucifix was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
