The corpus is modeled in high relief with the head fallen to the right, and beaded detail runs along the shaft and crossarm, carrying the eye between the figure and the flowering ends.
The flowering cross is one of the oldest images in Christian art, the cross understood not as a gallows but as the tree of life, breaking into bloom because of what happened on it.
