A wide border of pointed stars runs all around the rim of the Vintage Yellow Bronze Stella Maris Medal, so the whole piece reads as a night sky. Within it the Virgin stands upon the water with her hands joined and rays about her head, the sea worked in low lines beneath her feet, and her title divided to left and right of the figure: STELLA MARIS.
Star of the Sea is among the oldest of Mary's titles, sung in the hymn Ave Maris Stella and carried for centuries by sailors, fishermen and anyone making a crossing. The star is what you steer by when the shore has gone out of sight, and the title asks Mary to be exactly that. At three quarters of an inch it is an easy medal to wear every day, and the star border keeps it from looking like anything else in the drawer.
