This shamrock medal is filled by one broad three-lobed leaf, each lobe modelled separately and finely veined, its stem curling down through the lower half of the open ring where a second small sprig grows beside it. There is no lettering anywhere on it.
The shamrock belongs to Saint Patrick, who by long tradition bent down, picked one and held it up to explain the Trinity to the Irish: three lobes on a single stem, three persons in one God, not three gods and not one wearing three names. It is the plainest teaching aid in the history of catechesis and it has never been bettered. Worn on its own, the leaf stands for that doctrine and for Ireland at the same time, which is why it has been cast and carried by the Irish at home and abroad for as long as such things have been made.
