The Vintage Yellow Bronze Praying Cherub Rosary Center packs a whole small sculpture into half an inch. A child’s face looks out with curls above the brow and wings spread wide to either side, and beneath the chin two little hands are pressed palm to palm in prayer. The warm yellow bronze catches along the cheeks, the feathers and the fingers, all of them crowded forward toward the light.
Winged heads like this one began as a serious idea rather than an ornament. They represent the angels who, having no bodies, were pictured as faces and wings alone, occupied wholly with adoration before God. Hands have been added here so that the cherub can do what the person holding the beads is doing. Set at the turn of a rosary, it is a companion at prayer. There is no lettering on the piece.
