The Our Lady of Walsingham plaque frames its image like a small door. Between two turned pillars the Virgin sits crowned and upright, holding a lily-topped sceptre in her right hand while the Christ Child sits on her knee with a book. The pose is deliberately archaic, following the medieval Seat of Wisdom image that the Walsingham shrine restored.
Across the foot runs the lettering OUR LADY OF WALSINGHAM, naming the great English shrine in Norfolk. It was founded in 1061, when the lady of the manor was shown the house of the Annunciation and built its likeness in an English field, and for five hundred years Walsingham was England's Nazareth, the destination of pilgrims and of kings who walked the last mile barefoot. The shrine fell at the Reformation and was restored in the last century. Mary is honoured there as the woman who said yes at Nazareth, seated and steady, holding out her Son to whoever comes.
