The Virgin of Guadalupe stands full length in her mantle, hands joined, on a crescent held up from below, with a full burst of rays filling the field behind her and a small angel at either side of her head. Around the rim, running the whole way round, the medal is lettered N. S. DE GUADALUPE ROGAD POR NOSOTROS.
The Spanish means Our Lady of Guadalupe, pray for us, the plainest form of the prayer. The image is the one left on Juan Diego's tilma at Tepeyac in 1531, when the Virgin sent a poor man to his bishop carrying roses in winter and her own portrait behind them. She is patroness of Mexico and of all the Americas, and she is loved above all as the mother who came speaking his own language to a man nobody else would have listened to. At an inch and a half the rays and the angels stay perfectly legible.
