The Vintage Yellow Bronze Openwork Medal is cut open across its upper half, so that a veiled figure at prayer stands against nothing but light. She is shown in profile with long loose hair falling behind the veil and her hands joined at her breast, rising out of a thick bank of roses and small blossoms that fills the bottom of the oval and climbs the right-hand side.
It is a Marian piece, and the roses massed around her carry their own long meaning: the rosary takes its name from a garland of them, and they have stood for Our Lady in devotional art for centuries. The open field above the figure is the whole point of the design, giving the prayer somewhere to rise into. The relief is soft and deep, and the flowers hold their detail well under the hand-finished surface.
