Overlapping pointed leaves cover the arms and shaft of the Vintage White Bronze Thistle Crucifix edge to edge, radiating outward from the crossing like the bracts of a thistle head, with the same spiny texture climbing the finial above. The corpus hangs at the center in smooth relief, and the contrast between the quiet figure and the bristling ground around it is the whole of the design.
The titulus above the head is lettered INRI, abbreviating the Latin Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum — Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews. The thistle carries a double sense on a cross: it is the old emblem of Scotland, and in Christian ornament more widely it belongs both to the thorns of the Passion and to the ground cursed in Genesis to bring forth thorns and thistles. Setting it around the corpus makes the cross grow out of the very thing it undoes.
The thistle crucifix was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
