The Vintage White Bronze Edwardian Acanthus Scroll Crucifix is given over almost entirely to carving. The arms flare into broad rounded lobes, and acanthus scrollwork rolls from the foot up the shaft and outward along both arms, cut deep enough to hold shadow. At the crossing the corpus is slender and still, the one quiet thing in all that movement.
The ornament carries the piece by itself, in the confident decorative manner of the years just before the First World War, when silversmiths' work was at its most fluent. The effect is a crucifix that reads first as a beautiful object and then, once the eye settles, as what it is: the Passion set in a garden of leaf, richness offered back to the one whose death it records.
