The Vintage Sterling Silver First Sorrow Rosary Center carries a whole scene on one face. Under an arcade, beside a seven-branched lampstand and an altar set with an open book, a bearded figure holds the Child while a haloed woman kneels at the centre and a third figure waits at the right with a basket. It is the Presentation in the Temple, and for a piece three-quarters of an inch across the detail is remarkable.
That scene is the First Sorrow of Mary. It was in the Temple that Simeon took the Child in his arms and told his mother a sword would pierce her own soul also, and the other face of this center shows what he foretold: the Virgin veiled and haloed with the swords already driven into her heart, lettered MATER DOLOROSA, Mother of Sorrows, around the rim. Prophecy on one side and fulfilment on the other make it a center to pray with rather than simply to look at. The surface is left rustic, the relief soft and unpolished.
