The Vintage Bronze Yalalag Cross with Angels keeps the whole traditional form: a broad cross with scalloped arm tips, three small winged angels standing across the top, and short hooks beneath each arm where the companion crosses hang. One face carries a flaming heart crowned with thorns at the crossing; the other is covered edge to edge with incised folk ornament, chevrons, ladder bars, rope borders and radiating strokes.
The Yalalag cross is the cross of Villa Hidalgo Yalálag, a Zapotec town in the mountains of Oaxaca, where women have worn one for generations with the smaller crosses swinging from its arms. It is at once a Christian cross and the mark of a particular people and place, worn openly and every day. The flaming heart at its center ties it to the devotion to the Sacred Heart that came with the friars and took deep root there.
The cross was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
