The Vintage Bronze Woodgrain Crucifix with INRI Titulus is cast in metal but cut to look like carved wood. Long grain lines run down the shaft and out along the arms, and small pegs finish the arm ends as though the cross had been pinned together by hand. Against that plain ground the corpus stands fully modeled, the head fallen to the right, the loincloth knotted at the hip.
Above the head is a raised tablet lettered INRI, for the Latin Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum, Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews, the charge Pilate ordered fixed to the cross. Casting a wooden cross in metal was a favorite conceit in devotional work, and it says something worth keeping: the humility of rough timber, held in a material that will not wear away. At two inches it sits well in the hand.
