The Vintage Bronze Winged Cherub Rosary Center is cast as the head of a winged cherub, the face full and childlike beneath a fringe of hair, the wings sweeping down and crossing under the chin so that the outline of the whole piece reads as a heart. The modelling is generous for something this small, and the crossing feathers take the light along their length.
Winged heads of this kind stood for the angelic presence in devotional art from the Renaissance onward, and they turn up again and again on old rosaries and reliquaries, where an angel keeps watch over prayers as they are said. Set at the join of the beads, the cherub gives the rosary a guardian at its center, which suits a prayer so often taken up on behalf of somebody else.
