The whole of the Vintage Bronze Winged Cherub Rosary Center is a single winged head. A child’s face is modelled in full round relief, the hair curling back and the head turned slightly to one side, and beneath it a pair of feathered wings spreads the width of the piece, worked in rows of overlapping plumes that step down toward the tips. It is a surprising amount of sculpture for so small an object.
Winged heads belong to a very old visual tradition: the seraph shown as face and wings alone, because in that order of angels there is nothing to depict but adoration. They appear on tombs, altars and devotional metalwork from the Renaissance onward, and at the turn of a rosary the choice is a pointed one, putting an image of unbroken praise at the place where the prayer turns back on itself. The piece carries no lettering.
