The Vintage Bronze Wheat and Grapes Crucifix sets the emblems of the altar on the cross itself. A sheaf of wheat rises in the finial above the titulus, a heavy bunch of grapes hangs from a vine below the feet, and small flowers and leaves fill the terminals of the arms. Christ is modelled in bright, careful relief against the darkened field, cut deeply enough to hold shadow at just under two inches.
The scroll above his head reads INRI, the Latin Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum — Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews. Wheat and grapes are bread and wine, and putting them on a crucifix says in one image what the Church teaches about the Mass: that what happened on Calvary and what happens on the altar are the same offering. It is a quietly instructive piece, made to be looked at as much as worn.
