The Vintage Bronze Virgin Mary Cross Medal is a cross worked as a medal. Its arms are filled with fleur-de-lis ornament over a finely stippled ground, four openings are pierced at the inner corners, and the outline is scalloped all the way around. At the center, in a small clear field of her own, stands the haloed Virgin with her arms lowered and open in the pose of the Miraculous Medal.
The piece reads two ways at once, a cross from across a room and a Marian medal in the hand, which is exactly what these nineteenth-century French and Italian designs set out to do. Mary at the center of the cross is the theology in miniature: she stands there because her Son does, in the place the Gospel of John gives her, and the lilies filling the arms are her own flower repeated four times over.
The medal was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
