Overlapping pointed leaves cover the arms and shaft of the Vintage Bronze Thistle Crucifix edge to edge, radiating from the crossing like the bracts of a thistle head, and the same spiny texture climbs the finial above. The corpus hangs at the center in smooth relief, and the contrast between the quiet figure and the bristling ground around it is the whole design.
The titulus above the head is lettered INRI, abbreviating the Latin Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum, “Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews.” The thistle is an old emblem of Scotland, and in Christian ornament more broadly it stands for the crown of thorns and for the ground cursed after Eden to bring forth thorns and thistles. Spread across a cross, it says that the whole of that curse was gathered up and carried by the figure at the center.
The thistle crucifix was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves the crucifix’s vintage character.
