The Vintage Bronze Textured Coptic Cross is all texture. The arms swell gently and the ends are left soft and rounded, and across every surface runs an irregular field of hammered pits, no two the same depth, so that the light breaks up rather than reflects. There is no corpus and no border, only the shape of the cross and the worked ground.
The antique original is Coptic, of the nineteenth century, from the Church of Egypt, one of the oldest Christian communities in the world and one that has kept the cross at the center of its life through many centuries of pressure. Crosses of this kind were pitted by hand with a punch rather than cast smooth, and the marks were never meant to be regular. The reproduction carries them faithfully, so an antiqued finish settles into the hollows and lifts on the high points.
