The Stella Maris medal is a small round piece with a wide border of pointed stars raised all around the rim, so the whole thing reads as a night sky. Within it the Virgin stands upon the water, her hands joined and rays about her head, the sea worked in low horizontal lines beneath her feet, her title divided to left and right of the figure: STELLA MARIS.
Star of the Sea is one of the oldest of Mary's titles, sung in the hymn Ave Maris Stella since at least the ninth century and carried ever since by sailors, fishermen, emigrants and anyone making a crossing. The star is the fixed point you steer by when the water gives you nothing else, which is the whole of the devotion in one image. At three quarters of an inch it wears easily every day.
