The Vintage Bronze St. Patrick Medal, Our Patron sets the apostle of Ireland three-quarter length inside a deep rectangular border. He is shown as a bishop, mitred and haloed, a crozier in his right hand and his cope falling in heavy folds, which is how Patrick was depicted for centuries before the shamrock-and-snakes shorthand of later popular art took over.
The lettering is cast into the border on all four sides: ST. PATRICK across the top, OUR PATRON down the left, PRAY FOR US down the right, with a scrolled ornament closing the foot. It is a patron's medal in the plainest sense, a name, a claim and a petition, and the claim is the interesting part. To call a saint our patron is to say the relationship already exists, and the families and parishes who carried a medal like this one meant it quite literally.
