The Vintage Bronze St. Charles Borromeo Medal gives the saint in profile, spare face, long nose, biretta and rochet, with the legend CARĀ· BORROMEVSĀ· CARĀ· ARCĀ· MEDĀ·, Charles Borromeo, Cardinal Archbishop of Milan. He was the sixteenth-century archbishop who rebuilt the church life of his city after Trent, and who stayed in Milan to nurse the plague-stricken when everyone able to leave had gone.
The reverse is heraldic rather than figural: a coronet above the word HVMILITAS in gothic letters, with the three interlaced rings of the Borromeo arms below and a Roman-numeral group beneath. Humilitas, humility, was the family motto, and Charles made it so thoroughly his own that the word is now read as his rather than theirs. He is kept as a patron of bishops, catechists, seminarians and spiritual directors.
