Vintage Bronze St. Benedict Cross Medal with Medallion

A round medallion is set at the crossing of this flared cross, whose short arms are strewn with small flowers and whose top is crested. On the front the medallion carries Saint Benedict in profile with his crozier, ringed by a rim legend, and PAX is lettered on the upper arm. On the back the medallion holds the Benedictine cross with the customary initials set in and around its quarters.
PAX, peace, is the word the Benedictines have kept over their doorways for fifteen centuries, the settled peace of a life ordered by prayer and work. The letters around the cross stand for the old exorcism verses: may the holy Cross be my light, let not the dragon be my guide. The Saint Benedict medal has been worn for protection longer than almost any other, and this one puts the medal itself at the heart of a cross.
