Built like a piece of Gothic architecture, this medal sets a tall pointed oval inside a cusped frame with foliate spandrels. Within it stands a young cleric in cassock and surplice, haloed, his hands crossed on his breast, against a field strewn with small fleurs-de-lis, an IHS roundel closing the oval at his feet. The arched legend reads S. ALOYSI GONZAGA ORA PRO NOBIS — Saint Aloysius Gonzaga, pray for us.
Aloysius was a marquis's son who gave up his title to enter the Jesuits and died at twenty-three, worn out from nursing plague victims in Rome. He is the patron of young people and of those who care for the sick. The reverse keeps the same frame and gives it to the Virgin, standing veiled with her hands crossed, ringed by O MARIE CONCUE SANS PECHE PRIEZ POUR NOUS — O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us — the invocation of the Miraculous Medal in its original French.
