The Vintage Bronze Spanish Colonial Crucifix is the most sculptural piece in this group. The arms of the cross swell into deeply carved leaf forms shaded with fine hatching, openings are pierced through around the crossing, and below the feet the shaft spreads into a broad leafy skirt. Christ is modeled slender and elongated against all of it, and a small scrolled cartouche above his head carries INRI, for Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum, Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews.
The antique original came from the Philippines, where it hung on an old rosary. Spanish Colonial devotional metal made across the Pacific trade is known for exactly this abundance of carved leaf, the faith arriving from Spain and taking on the flowering exuberance of the islands that received it. At two and five-eighths inches, the piece has real presence in the hand.
