The Vintage Bronze Small Cross Button is a half inch of quiet folk devotion: a plain stepped cross with a sunken center on a gently domed face, with four clusters of three raised beads marking the points around it. That is the whole design, and it is enough.
Devotional buttons like this were once made to be sewn onto a coat, a bag or a cloak, so that a cross went everywhere its owner did without ever being on show. The stepped form is the cross raised on its Calvary steps, and the three beads standing at each of the four quarters carry the Trinity out to the four corners of the world, which is a good deal of catechism for half an inch. Because it is cast rather than stamped, the beads and the arms vary a little in crispness from one to the next, and the antiqued finish settles into each differently.
