Vintage Bronze Scrollwork Crucifix with Rayed Nimbus

Each arm of the scrollwork crucifix flares into a cusped terminal filled with pierced scrollwork, so light passes through the outer edges of the cross while the center stays solid. Behind the head of the corpus a rayed nimbus opens like a small sunburst, and the base gathers into a matching scrolled foot. The relief is crisp for a piece of this size, and the pierced edges keep it from reading as heavy.
Above the head is the titulus, lettered INRI, the abbreviation of Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum, Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews, the charge Pilate ordered fixed to the cross for everyone passing to read. It is the only lettering on the piece, and the nimbus behind the head answers it: the title written in mockery, the glory shown in earnest. On a crucifix this small it is a pleasure to find the four letters cast so cleanly.
