The Vintage Bronze Scrollwork Cross Rosary Center is built around a Greek cross of equal, slightly flaring arms set inside a pierced ring at the middle of a heart-shaped plate. Deep scrolled volutes curl across both shoulders, and beneath the ring a pierced fleur-like ornament drops toward the foot. The design is cut through in several places, so the center reads as pattern and shadow together.
The equal-armed cross within a circle is one of the oldest Christian forms there is, older in devotional use than the long Latin cross, and it carries the same meaning in a shape that can be taken in at once. That matters on a rosary center, which is read by the fingers as often as by the eye, at the point where the beads gather and the prayer turns back on itself. There is no lettering anywhere on the piece.
