The Vintage Bronze Scrollwork Center shows two profile heads facing left, one set slightly behind the other, framed by C-scrolls and ribbon work with the metal pierced away at the sides so that the design floats. The forward head is veiled, and the second rises just behind it beneath a scrolled hood.
They are Jesus and Mary, shown together rather than back to back, so the eye takes them in at once. Paired profiles of this kind appear on European rosary fittings right across the nineteenth century, and they suit the beads exactly, since the rosary is Mary's own prayer about her Son's life, her face turned toward his throughout.
