The Vintage Bronze San Damiano Crucifix follows the painted cross before which St. Francis prayed and heard the charge to rebuild the Church. Christ is shown living rather than dying, his eyes open and his arms wide, and the arms of the cross are crowded with the small witnessing figures and angels of the original painting, with a further scene set in the panel above his head.
The reverse is given over to words. ASSISI is cast across the top arm, and below it runs the blessing Francis wrote out for Brother Leo: Benedicat tibi Dominus et custodiat te; ostendat faciem suam tibi et misereatur tui; convertat vultum suum ad te et det tibi pacem. May the Lord bless you and keep you; may he show his face to you and have mercy on you; may he turn his countenance toward you and give you peace. A Tau cross, the sign Francis used for his own name, stands at the foot.
The crucifix was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
