Almost nothing on the Vintage Bronze Russian Openwork Crucifix is left solid. The arms and the broad foot break apart into deep scrolled foliage with light coming through between the tendrils, a crowned finial rises above the crossing, and Christ hangs at the center with his head fallen to one side, the only still shape in all that movement.
Pierced scrollwork of this kind belongs to the Russian Orthodox tradition of cast crosses, where a crucifix was made to accompany a whole life, from baptism onward, and was worked heavily enough to survive the years of it. For all its size the piece is sculptural rather than showy, and the openwork keeps it light in the hand. In the Christian East such a cross is less an ornament than a companion.
The Russian openwork crucifix was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves the crucifix's vintage character.
