The Vintage Bronze Rose Rosary Center with Apparition Scene is worked on both faces of a small shield-shaped body. The front holds a sunken oval in which a veiled figure stands within a rocky niche while a smaller figure kneels below and to the left, the apparition as generations of pilgrims have pictured it: Our Lady appearing above, and a child on her knees before her. The relief is soft and gentle, an impression of the moment rather than a sharp report of it.
Turn it over and the reverse is given entirely to a single rose in full bloom, petals and leaves modeled in high relief and spilling nearly to the edges. Roses belong to Our Lady throughout Catholic art, and the Rosary takes its very name from them, so a rose on the back of a rosary center is exactly where it belongs.
