The Vintage Bronze Pierced Fleur-de-Lis Crucifix is built on open, leafy arms: each of the four ends widens into a pierced trefoil filled with a fleur-de-lis, so the cross reads as much like a flowering plant as a beam of wood. The corpus is modelled in high relief at the crossing, the head inclined, the body drawn long and slender, with a small titulus above it.
The lily has belonged to the Virgin since the earliest paintings of the Annunciation, and a crucifix framed in lilies puts her quietly at the foot of her Son's cross, where the Gospel of John places her. The trefoil form carries the Trinity as well, three lobes on a single stem, so the four ends of this cross say both things at once. Nineteenth-century European makers used pierced work like this because the open ground keeps a two-inch cross from ever looking heavy.
