Vintage Bronze Peace and Good Will Medal, 1801

A dove flies across the front of this medal with an olive sprig in its beak, set in a full burst of rays inside a beaded rim, and the legend arched above and below it reads PEACE AND GOOD WILL TO ALL MEN. The other face shows a spray of olive and flowering branches tied at the stem, with the date 1801 in the field and THE DESIRE OF THE PEOPLE running the rim.
The wording and the date belong with the English peace tokens struck around the preliminaries of peace in 1801, when towns worn down by years of war marked the news with something they could keep. The dove with the olive branch is older still: the bird sent out from the ark that came back with a green leaf, the first word that the flood had gone down, and behind it the song over Bethlehem promising peace to men of good will. Both are here, on a piece made for people who wanted it badly.
