On the Vintage Bronze Orans Cross the figure and the cross are one thing. A round veiled head with simply cut features sits at the crossing, both arms lift and open along the side arms, and a long ribbed robe fills the shaft below, so that the whole cross becomes a person standing in prayer. The ground around the figure is left pitted and rough.
That raised-arms posture is the orans, the oldest attitude of Christian prayer, painted on the walls of the catacombs long before crucifixes were made and kept today in the gesture the priest makes at the altar. A cross of the fourth century carries no corpus because the Church of that age did not yet show the crucified body. It showed the believer instead: standing, alive, hands open. The roughness of the surface belongs to the original and has been kept rather than smoothed away.
